Monday, March 15, 2010Choosing Life or Death Have you ever looked in a mirror and didn’t recognize that face looking back at you? Maybe you are physically changed: got a new haircut or went on vacation and got a tan. You could have also emotionally changed: you are angry or confused, or you realized you were mean to someone for no plain reason. But when you look in that mirror, you have conflict with yourself. In the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins has looked in the mirror and not liked what he saw. Although his reflection was not physically changed, his WAS emotionally changed. He always wished he would be back in his cozy, hobbit hole with no gollums or goblins chasing after him. He always regretted his decision in agreeing to go with the dwarves as their fourteenth man on their adventure to find their long lost treasure. (Going without food, a pipe, worn out clothes, and safety was not quite Bilbo's lifestyle) Sometimes, Bilbo was proud of the fact that he escaped the goblins mountain without any help at all (except for the magic invisibiltily ring) At the time, Bilbo wanted to prove his Took side and be brave and courageous as a burgular, but starting on the journey on the second day, he already wished he would have declined the offer and stayed home with his kettle and fire. Bilbo has had to make decisions on whether he should agree to going on this journey or leave the dwarves empty-handed with only thirteen adventurers (which was quite unlucky). He has run into so many scenes where he would need to make a decision on how to act and how to keep the dwarves and himself alive and he has to resist the fact that he CAN’T give up! His house is many miles away through goblins and trolls and his wish to return home will have to wait until he finishes his adventure (if he does) and return home a hero. This is a wonderful response! Isn't it true? We all can be conflicted at times. Mr. Bilbo Baggins is really no different than we are! Should we do this? Maybe we shouldn't! What will happen if we are successful? Heros? What if we fail? Maybe we should not even try, then we can't fail. Good job! ~Mrs. Best
